a device for measuring atmospheric pressure, often specially calibrated for use as an altimeter, consisting of a box or chamber partially exhausted of air, having an elastic top and a pointer to indicate the degree of compression of the top caused by the external air. Cf. mercury barometer.

a barometer that is worked by the pressure of air on the elastic lid of an air tight metal box from which the air has been pumped out. A change of pressure causes a pointer attached to the lid to move along a scale.
